Self-care can’t be applied in just one area of your life, self-care needs to be spread across different aspects of your life.
Without self-care, you could find yourself faced with a lot of different challenges. They could include, illness, debt, unemployment, loneliness, difficulty managing emotions, overwhelm, burn-out, sleep disturbances, lowered cognitive ability and a fixed/ poor mindset.
Here are the 6 types of self-care I work with:
Physical: this includes exercise, sleep, nutrition, relaxation, health and sexual needs. This can include going for a walk, ensuring you have 8 hours of sleep each night, getting a massage, eating healthy, seeing the doctor when you need too and having a healthy sex life.
Mental: this involves practising mindfulness, creativity and learning new things. This can include journaling, drawing, learning a new skill, reading books and seeing your counsellor.
Emotional: this is being able to navigate and handle your emotions, dealing with stress, creating healthy boundaries and developing compassion and empathy for others. This can include writing in a gratitude journal, learning how to say no, reflecting on your emotions and knowing what your boundaries are and enforcing them.
Social: this is having healthy, supportive and caring relationships around you and creating a sense of belonging in your life. This includes regularly seeing your close friends and family, joining a team sport and meeting new people.
Spiritual: this is using your values, goals and ambitions to shape your life and mind. This may include working a career that you are passionate about, meditating, volunteering, looking for ways to grow (for example. completing a guide like this) and journaling.
Recreational: this involves making time for hobbies, fun activities, new experiences, and things that simply make you happy.
